Solitude seeks to add less of Silver Fork
Hoping to stay competitive in a tough industry while minimizing opposition from backcountry skiers, Solitude Mountain Resort has cut back its request to expand into Silver Fork Canyon.
Instead of asking the U.S. Forest Service to amend its operating permit to include all of Silver Fork, a tributary of Big Cottonwood Canyon, the resort is seeking to add operations only on the east side of the creek that runs along the canyon bottom.

Solitude Resort wants to expand into Silver Fork
Solitude Mountain Resort is asking the U.S. Forest Service to let it expand into Silver Fork basin, a proposal that immediately sparked objections from influential Salt Lake City water officials and backcountry skiers.
Resort owner David DeSeelhorst submitted a request last month to amend the Big Cottonwood Canyon resort's special-use permit, contending the move into Silver Fork would allow Solitude to cater better to the future recreational needs of a fast-growing Wasatch Front population. Read the full article

Come blow your horn: North American Alphorn Retreat blows into Utah
Here's the main image that most people associate with the Alphorn: A Swiss man on an Alpine mountain plays a long horn while another guy yells an ad for the cough-drop company: Riii-co-laaa!"
Tony Brazelton plays the giant instrument and has actually worked for Ricola. "It's about time you guys paid me," he told company executives after years of indirectly advertising for them while playing the conically shaped horn around the world.

Taste of the Nation & Annual HOA Meetings
This year's charity event for hunger was another huge success! Perfect weather, smiling faces, live music, and incredible food made for a memorable experience. Many owners attended the event in concert with the annual HOA meetings. Solitude Ski Resort announced the only new chair lift in Utah this year with the replacement of the Powderhorn Chair. The new quad lift will service skiers from the Apex/Moonbeam drop-off areas to the top of the mountain.
2009 Tax Update...Good News!
Many of you probably opened your estimated tax bill with confusion and anger. How could taxes be increasing in such a difficult year with values going down? Most of the increase was due to a proposed budget increase from a split with the local school district. Upon hearing negative feedback from property owners, one of the new districts decided to pull their proposed budget increase off the table and the other is going back to the drawing board to make cuts. This is great news for Solitude owners in that the actual taxes for 2009 should come in considerably lower than what was presented in the tax notices sent out by Salt Lake County. Recent articles on the subject can be seen at: http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=7407008 (Canyons School District) and http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=7431647 (Jordan School District). Please call us directly if you have additional tax questions or would like comparable sales to appeal your taxes.
Real Estate sales have been mostly stagnant in the village with few new sales to report. Considering other resort areas have swelling inventory and sales that are off more than 30-40%, we feel fortunate that values appear to be holding. Recent sales have gone for approximately 5-15% off list price. Attached you will see a complete list of active listings in the village as well as recent sales. Please also visit the website below for current real estate opportunities.

The Salt Lake Tribune
Utah's ski industry is basking in the results of the latest annual ski magazine reader surveys. For the second year in a row - and fourth time in eight years - Deer Valley Resort was deemed the best in North America by the older, more well-heeled readers of Ski magazine. View Full Story

Dear Solitude Enthusiast,
I just received some fantastic news about a few mountain improvements for Solitude this Summer! (see below a message from Gary DeSeelhorst). As more details are announced, I will keep you informed.
Hope to see you in the village soon!
Subject: Summer Construction Projects / FYI
We’re delighted to announce two new high-speed detachable technology lifts will be installed this summer – Apex and Moonbeam – our primary mountain entry lifts. They will be in the same alignment. In addition, extensive grading and trail improvements from those two top terminals will occur along with continuing extensions of snow-making system. We’re again investing upwards of $8 million; the summer will be challenging.
Winter Resort closing date remains unchanged – last day April 13. Snowfall will end up about normal at 500 inches, January was something else.

Greetings from Snowy Solitude!
As of yesterday, the Cottonwood resorts have reached the 4th highest snowfall by this February date (over 510" at Alta), since they started keeping records many years ago! Needless to say, the conditions are "Epic" as my seven year old son Gabe likes to say.
Time to come visit if you haven't done so in a while...
Announcing our new & improved website: www.lifestyleprops.com
Despite the national housing woes, the inventory of listed properties at Solitude appears to be within the "healthy" range of 10% or less, so we are cautiously optimistic about where the market is heading. New families continue to discover the area and fall in love with the beauty and charm of Solitude Village. Real Estate sales have slowed slightly from this period last year (in terms of number of sales), however prices have been holding firm and still selling near asking price. Rental numbers have also been steady and let's face it, new inventory in Big Cottonwood Canyon is not ever likely to match that of today's pricing!
Please let me know if I can be of assistance, or if you would like additional information on real estate or rental opportunities in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
Warm Regards,

Dear Solitude Enthusiast,
Greetings from Solitude Resort Village! I trust this message finds you healthy and well and preparing for another great ski season in Big Cottonwood Canyon. I send this email with a grin as it appears that our weather pattern of late has taken a change for the better (see attached photo of our recent snowfall in the village). Pending a couple more storms, the mountain should be fully open for powder action!
I have attached the latest real estate offering sheet in the village for your review. The current opportunities at Solitude are some of the best values in the Utah mountains and are ready to enjoy NOW! Please visit the website below if you would like to see virtual tours or additional details www.lifestyleprops.com
Despite the “doom & gloom” that seems to persist on the national level in terms of real estate news, I am optimistic about the future values at Solitude due to our forever limited supply and increasing demand. The secret of Big Cottonwood Canyon has consistently been proclaimed with recent features in Warren Miller films, Ski Magazines, National News Publications, and the like…
On another note, I would also like to announce our new company, CANYON VACATION RENTALS www.canyonvacationrentals.com
Some of you know that in April, I purchased the Bottom-line Snowboard shop (with a couple partners) across from the Silver-fork Lodge on Big Cottonwood Road. After completing an exhaustive approval process with Salt Lake County, we are now fervently working on an extensive remodel project for the building with expected occupancy sometime in the late Spring. We intend to offer full service property management options for owners and guests in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The building will also include a general store, coffee shop, & tourist information center for the passer-by. Due to our late start, we have decided to only take 5 properties under management for this ski season, however we would love to discuss future opportunities with anyone who might be interested in our services.
Again, I wish you all a wonderful Holiday Season and hope to see you in the village soon.

Panels to focus on canyon uses - By Mike Gorrell
The Salt Lake Tribune
After the idea was floated last fall to develop tunnels to interlink the Cottonwood canyons and Park City ski resorts, Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. asked smart-growth advocate Robert Grow to oversee a committee to explore the possibilities and pitfalls.
Grow organized the committee's second meeting on Friday, suggesting the best way to proceed was to subdivide into three subcommittees that would focus on different issues pertinent to any proposed uses of Wasatch Mountain View Full Story: http://www.sltrib.com/business/ci_5347424?source=email

Dear Solitude Enthusiast,
An interesting article in the local newspaper today regarding the sale of Brighton resort (see attached link below).
Still unsure what this could mean for Solitude, but with a price tag of $35 million for Brighton, I think it is fair to say that some additional money will be pumped into the canyon in terms of marketing and services! I will keep you informed of any follow up articles or news...
